Show and tell
Give athletes a real picture.
Coach emphasis:
Quick feet and change of speed into the rush
Gain ground through the slant movement
Bend after the move
Control trough the hoop
Rip to the sky after the scoop
Don't just coach it. Show it.
Feeling stuck at the top of your rush?
Stop hopping through your hip flip.
Step through and crossover run.
Same athlete. Same rep.
Just a different transition.
Quick coaching sequence to rewire the movement.
Being on the side of your foot while bending is a recipe for slipping.
Big toe in the ground = control to bend the edge.
The best guys all do this consistently. Look at these Shin Angles!
Small sample from a first session with me.
We're building:
Shoulder turn to flip the hips
Crossover run for a natural bend
Convincing euro steps
Power + leverage using shoulder pads for real contact feel
Everything is built to translate to the field.
Good rushers get sacks.
Elite rushers create turnovers.
Elite rushers attack the elbow to create strip sacks.
How do you win when you lose?
Second move reaction.
First move gets stopped and most guys freeze.
That's not strength.
That's reaction.
Don't panic if the first move fails, you need IMMEDIATE second move follow up:
Swipe through
Pull through
Shift leverage and re-win
First move gets you there
Second move gets you paid.
Build it. Then apply it. Then build off it.
Start with the euro.
Turn it into power with a violent shoulder.
Go from 2 → 1.
Then build off it:
Euro → shoulder turn → swipe
Start to “load,” in your 2-point stance. Inch your way towards the ground during cadence. Worst case, you fall into a 3-point stance. Build momentum before the snap so you can blast off. Elite get off = sacks.
Coaching is show and tell, not just talk.
Pass Rush Emphasis:
Crossover Run + Bend Control
Contact Balance
Swipe and Step Through
Active Arms Around The Hoop
Euro / Jab Step
If your weight room work doesn't show up on the field... it's wasted.
Rotational power and hip separation build the mechanics needed for pass rush:
Shoulder turn + swipe
Violent counters
Build the pattern.
Reinforce the pattern.
Apply it to the rush.
Build it. Then apply it.
Euro Step mechanics.
Vernon Griffith helping build the pattern so it transfers.
Attack the angle → feed rotation through the hip
Open the shoulders with the hips → cleaner & more efficient swipe
